On the evening of December 7th, Professor Nan Zhibiao, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Dean of College of Pastoral Agriculture Science and Technology of Lanzhou University, personally delivered a special lecture entitled “Enhancing comprehensive quality and becoming a useful talent” to the teachers and students of the college. The party and government leaders, teachers’ representatives, new vocational teaching staff and all undergraduates attended the lecture. The lecture was presided over by Zhang Dawei, Secretary of the Party Committee of College of Pastoral Agriculture Science and Technology.
At the beginning of the lecture, Academician Nan first introduced the role and function of education and emphasized that undergraduate education is an important turning point in life. He hoped that the students could cultivate the ability of independent thinking, improve their comprehensive quality and lay a foundation for lifelong learning.
Subsequently, through analysis of the aspects of whole region demand, whole industry demand, multidisciplinary demand of the pastoral industry, as well as demands of bearing obligation of a great nation and promoting sustainable global development, Academician Nan pointed out that in future, a large number of high quality talents of the pastoral industry would be needed for stronger scientific and technological support for pastoral science required by national economic and social development. He hoped that the students would shoulder the mission of pastoral science research and study hard professional knowledge.
Subsequently, Academician Nan quoted classics and history and narrated the importance of cultivating moral quality, cultural quality, practice quality, professional quality and physical quality. Combined with his own growth experiences, he hoped that the students would build love for their homes and the nation and a sense of responsibility, learn to be grateful, understand teamwork, try to improve the abilities of oral, written and communication skills, develop healthy living habits, exercise for a strong physique, and improve comprehensive quality.
At last, Academician Nan stressed that the undergraduate period is the best time to improve comprehensive quality and reminded the students to study hard, be diligent both physically and mentally, and cherish the undergraduate period by reading and practicing more. He encouraged the student to strive to learn foreign languages and develop a global vision, as well as pay attention to multicultural communications. Through his own experience of applying for the 973 project, Academician Nan inspired the students to constantly set clear and feasible goals, to be firm and indomitable, to accurately evaluate themselves, to be confident without inferiority, and to strive to surpass themselves. He hoped that the students would be content with their life and have low standard of life and high standard for work.
